Describe and evaluate your skills development over the course of your production work from foundation portfolio to advanced production ?
I learnt many differing skills to do with the used of digital technology starting with my preliminary work . In I preliminary work we used standard camera technique to show a man presenting a binuess proposal to a board room .During the research section of I used the internet site youtube to research the differnt types of thriller film opening. I looked at the differing elements of thriller film opening for example the opening to citizen Kane and A clockwork orange a film that influenced my entire thriller opening. I used a digital camera SLR to film the scenes which was the first used to digital technology. Once I used camera to film the footage was then downloaded into imovie for editing. This was the same editing programme that I used for the editing of the thriller film footage.it was a fairly effective programme for this purpose as it was easy to use while editing the film. However it limited the possibility’s for our foundation work as I was not experienced enough to achieve the full capability's of the format. However the music editing function of imovie was much more successful as I was able to edit a piece of atmospheric music to crescendo at the appropriate time of the thriller opening. Also with the audio editing we layered the sound of diagnostic sound and the music . This was a more difficult skill to learn as the volume of the music had to be lowered to allow to sound of the door to be heard. The other programme that was used majority of the foundation year was photoshop . I had much more experience with this programme so I was able to achieve a much more professional looking final product when making the distribution poster.
In our advanced year production of a music video I used many other new digital technology's to complete the final product. When researching the music video genre I used a variety of differing sources and programmes . Firstly I used the DVD format to research the work of directors such as spike jonze and mark romanake. Then as a second stage of the research process I used the internet site youtube to continue the research process. After I had finished the research part of project and decided which type of music video I would make. Firstly I managed to master the imovie programme and used it to fully achieve the effects that I wanted in the video. I used imovie to edit the video to create the pass , narrative and genre of piece. Also I used it to edit the colour and composition of the shots I took on the camera a vital part of the final music video. Furthermore I mastered the digital camera and was able to use much more creative and imaginative shots. Coupled with the continuity editing in imovie the I used long ,mid and close up shots to establish the band in the music video. Also the shots of the band performance use close up long angle and panning shots to give a feel of the live performance of the band. Moreover during the editing of footage used slow-motion and fast-motion effects to speed up and slow down the video. This manipulation of time was one of the most effective elements of my music video and would not have been possible if not for the levels of learning of the in digital technology in the foundation year.
Analyse
the way in which the media represent the group you have studied?
In
the media the representation of British asian subculture has changed
hugely from the stereotypical offensive view in the early 1900s. In
the mid 20th century the representation of Indian
characters was stereotypical and its purpose to mock and ridicule the
brasian people. For example in the 1960 film the millionairess where
peter sellers plays a stereotype of a Indian doctor . The perfect
example of early media representation of the indian culture is the
song from the film “goodness gracious me” were peter sellers
characters sings in a thick deliberately offensive indian accent. The
song draws humour from the idea that an indian could be attractive to
Sophia Loren. This film is an important film
to display the opinion of the media community at that time as in a
huge budget film and with peter sellers national icon playing the an
offensive indian character. It was not until the mid-eights when
films where made that challenged the typical stereotype of indian
characters . The 1985 film my beautiful laundrette was the first to
show the complexity of modern british asian relationships and
characters. The indian characters in the film use the Thatcherite
atmosphere of self improvement and enterprise to build themselves as
the wealthy members of the community . The indian characters used
often illegal means to make themselves the only middle class wealthy
characters in the film. In contrast the british characters in the
film are poor and often unemployed spending almost all there time in
the wandering the streets and taking out their own short comings on
the more successful indian characters in the film.
